Ross County have confirmed the appointment of Tony Docherty as their new manager. The 54-year-old, who previously led Dundee, steps into the role following the departure of Don Cowie earlier this season.

Docherty arrives in Dingwall with a strong coaching background. After years as Derek McInnes’ assistant at St Johnstone, Bristol City, Aberdeen and Kilmarnock, he moved into management with Dundee. His first season in charge ended with a top-six finish in 2023-24, earning him nominations for both PFA Scotland and Scottish Football Writers’ manager of the year. However, he was released by Dundee last term after a 10th-place finish in the Premiership.

Key Points:

  • Docherty succeeds Don Cowie, who left after a poor start to the Championship campaign.

  • Interim boss John Robertson took charge for the 2-2 draw at Dunfermline.

  • His immediate challenge is guiding Ross County back to the Premiership after their play-off loss to Livingston in May.

Club chief executive Steven Ferguson welcomed the appointment, highlighting Docherty’s leadership and experience as central to Ross County’s ambitions. “His understanding of the game and his willingness to be part of our community give us confidence as we push for promotion,” he said.

For Docherty, the move represents both a return to the dugout and a new opportunity to prove himself. With the Championship season already underway, his focus will be on stabilising results quickly and building momentum for a return to Scotland’s top flight.
