This Morning regular Gyles Brandreth has shared his sadness live on air, telling viewers it has been “a struggle” following the heartbreaking death of his cat, Nala.

Speaking alongside Rylan Clark and Sian Welby on Friday’s programme (August 22), the 77-year-old broadcaster explained that Nala, a Maine Coon who had lived with him and his wife Michele for nearly two decades, passed away at the age of 19.

Brandreth, who has been part of ITV’s morning shows for years and previously presented Good Morning Britain in the 1980s, described how the cat originally belonged to a neighbour before “dancing over the wall” two years ago and deciding to stay with his family.

Key points from Gyles’ announcement:

  • Nala, a Maine Coon, lived to nearly 20 years old.

  • She passed away due to kidney failure and a tumour.

  • Gyles and Michele had cared for her since she chose to live with them.

  • He admitted nights feel especially difficult without her presence.

“She was nearly 20, which is very old for her breed,” he said. “She had kidney failure, a tumour, and was unable to walk. It was time to say goodbye. It was heartbreaking because we loved her so much and she only brought joy into our lives.”

Brandreth revealed that he and his wife were already considering opening their home to another cat. Their vet had introduced them to a stray kitten called Ethel, suggesting they could foster her to see if she would fit in.

Reflecting on the difficult first night without Nala, Gyles said: “It was quite a struggle last night because Nala always slept on my wife’s tummy. I had to put my hand there so she could sleep. I tried to be like Nala.”

He thanked his colleagues on the show for their kindness, adding: “We need another one. I’ll let you know how it goes. Thank you for being so sympathetic.”
