Former South Africa international Bevin Fortuin has died at the age of 46. The ex-Springbok full-back, capped between 2006 and 2007, is reported to have suffered a heart attack ahead of training at Northam Rhinos Rugby Club, where he was head coach.
The Rhinos confirmed the news in a statement, paying tribute to Fortuin’s impact both on and off the field. “With heavy hearts, we share the sad news of the passing of our beloved head coach, Bevin Fortuin. His immense contributions leave an immeasurable legacy. We salute you, Springbok no. 780. Rest easy, Champ.”
The Toyota Cheetahs, where Fortuin played 79 matches, also offered condolences: “He will be remembered for his warm smile.” South Africa head coach Rassie Erasmus posted a picture with his former teammate in tribute.
Scarlets push to remain in professional game
In Wales, the Scarlets have urged supporters to speak up as the Welsh Rugby Union continues its consultation on cutting professional teams from four to two. The region has launched an “open book” on its website, encouraging fans to share views that will be presented to the WRU before the September 26 deadline.
Scarlets stressed their role as a “pillar of Welsh rugby,” citing their world-class stadium in Llanelli, their role in player development, and their cultural significance in West Wales. The statement underlined that decisions taken now will shape the future of the club and its contribution to the game.
England stay grounded ahead of World Cup clash
Meanwhile, England’s Red Roses are preparing for Sunday’s World Cup quarter-final against Scotland. Forwards coach Louis Deacon insisted the squad is treating the knockout tie as “a normal week” despite being favourites for a 31st consecutive Test win.
England have been boosted by the return of captain Zoe Aldcroft to training after a knee injury. However, world player of the year Ellie Kildunne remains out under concussion protocols, meaning Emma Sing or Helena Rowland is expected to start at full-back.
