Chanettee Wannasaen produced a flawless performance to seize the opening-round lead at the Kroger Queen City Championship in Cincinnati. The Thai golfer signed for a nine-under-par 63, built on seven birdies and an eagle at the par-four 10th, leaving her three clear of the morning field at TPC River’s Bend.

World No. 2 Nelly Korda kept herself firmly in the chase with a five-under 67, thanks to a run of five birdies in seven holes. England’s Charley Hull and Lottie Woad also enjoyed promising starts, each posting a four-under 68 to sit five back.

Hull, who arrived in Ohio on the back of two runner-up finishes worldwide, made a fast start on her back nine with three early birdies and another at the 15th to briefly top the board. However, she cooled off with 11 straight pars to finish bogey-free. Reflecting on her round, Hull said she was pleased with the consistency but eager to “go lower over the next few days.”

Woad closed strongly, making three birdies in her final five holes, adding to an eagle earlier in her round. Despite two dropped shots, she left the course satisfied with her position heading into Friday.

Main takeaways from day one:

  • Chanettee Wannasaen leads at nine under after a bogey-free 63

  • Nelly Korda sits four shots behind at five under

  • Charley Hull and Lottie Woad share four under, five strokes adrift

  • Defending champion Lydia Ko and world No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul were among the later starters

Solheim Cup players Maja Stark and Celine Boutier also opened with 68s, keeping themselves in contention. With the leaderboard tightly packed behind Wannasaen, the second round promises to bring more movement as conditions remain soft and receptive.

The tournament continues on Friday with live coverage available throughout the week on Sky Sports.
